      <image:title>Bio - Biography</image:title>
<image:caption>Stephen H. Kawai was born and raised in Montréal, Canada. Obsessed with drawing from a very young age, his art training began as a teenager at the now-defunct MMFA School of Art and Design where he first encountered kinetic art during an outing to see the works of George Rickey. This artist’s spare and slowly moving pieces mesmerized him and eventually (or inevitably) led him to the work of Alexander Calder and to reproduce the basic mobile forms. For many years, mobiles took a sideline to drawing and painting, as well as academic pursuits (Stephen holds a degree in biochemistry and a doctorate in chemistry). Stephen’s interest in modern sculpture was rekindled in Paris, the city where mobiles were first created and the name coined, while carrying out postdoctoral research during the early ‘90s. Upon his return to Montreal, he began creating mobiles in his own distinct style, often utilizing natural materials such as rock, coral, shell and plant material and semi-precious stones, rather than abstract metal forms. Spheres of all sizes figure strongly in his work. He also draws on chemical concepts, having studied the realm of the infinitesimally small – the universe atoms and molecules. After a career of investigating the ways in which complex molecules move and vibrate, he finds that mobiles often behave in surprisingly similar manners, demonstrating how the nature of the universe repeats itself in many ways. <image:caption>Although I continue to work in two-dimensions, my artistic life for the past two decades has revolved primarily around mobiles and installations. These explorations of the interaction between mass and gravity span all styles from starkly minimal to rococo. My art practice allows me to address/express topics and issues which have formed my world view, whether they flow from environmental, mathematical, literary, scientific or emotional sources. Influenced to a great degree by Nature and natural objects/materials, my mobiles remind us of the many levels of the physical reality we inhabit. They also transcend it and often utilize gravity to seemingly defy it. In spite of their mechanical nature, the pieces are highly organic entities. Two seemingly unrelated domains remain constant and important influences on my process: seashells and chemistry. My longstanding fascination with the intricate patterns on shells has allowed me to develop an understanding of chaos in ordered arrangements and, conversely, the order in randomness, notions which are very relevant to my work. Chemical concepts, in particular my deep interest in the dynamic properties of complex molecules, have provided me with invaluable insight from which I continuously draw on when considering the kinetic aspects of my art.</image:caption>
